Are Online Sessions Right for You?
Preparing not only the connection, but also your own space, boundaries and comfort for the session.

More than joining a call
An online session can make access easier, but its suitability does not depend only on having an internet connection. Somewhere you can feel comfortable talking, uninterrupted time and support you can reach if needed should also be considered. Joining from home may feel reassuring for some people and pose challenges to privacy for others. You can share your own circumstances from the outset.
Before the first session, whether online work is suitable for your needs is discussed. Your age, location, safety circumstances and reason for seeking support can affect this decision. No way of working is expected to suit everyone equally. A recommendation for a different kind of support does not mean your needs are being dismissed.
Think together about a private space
Consider who might hear the session, whether someone could enter the room and whether you are using a shared device. Headphones can help keep the other person’s voice from being heard, but they do not, on their own, prevent people around you from hearing your voice. That is why the actual conditions where you are need to be considered alongside the technology.
If you cannot find a suitable place at home, you can say so at the beginning. Joining a session while driving, in a public space or in the middle of another task that requires your attention is not appropriate. You can ask whether sessions are recorded and how the platform handles data. Neither recording nor another person’s participation should be taken for granted without discussion.
What happens if the connection drops?
A quick check of your camera, sound and internet beforehand can help. What matters most is knowing how you will get back in touch if the connection drops. The link to use, appointment time, time zone and plan for a technical problem should be clear before the session. That way, you will not have to invent a new plan when something goes wrong.
How to access support in your location in an emergency is also part of the working arrangements. Especially if you are joining from another country, whether the service can appropriately be provided in that location should be discussed separately. Requesting an online appointment does not mean sessions can be offered in every country or in every situation.
Communication on both sides of the screen
Silence or a brief delay may feel different when talking through a screen. If you did not hear something or are unsure what was understood, you can ask again. If the camera angle, lighting or constantly seeing your own image affects you, you can discuss it. Technical comfort can be addressed within the session, too; you are not expected to prepare a perfect room.
If spending a long time in front of a screen is difficult for you, say so before the session. You can also share access needs related to hearing, vision or using a device. Suitable adjustments should be considered together; you do not have to assume that an important need will be understood without being expressed. You do not have to wait until the session ends to mention discomfort that arises after it begins, either. Checking whether you have been understood can be a natural part of the conversation.
Return from the session to everyday life
If possible, leave a short transition period rather than going straight into another meeting after your session. You can take a few minutes to notice what you need at that moment. Share how the online format felt for you at the next session. Asking about how the work proceeds, making changes or considering another option is a natural part of the process.
