Feelings, Boundaries and a New Routine During Divorce
Considering the uncertainty around a decision, everyday needs and, where there are children, their experience as distinct parts of the picture.

Different feelings around one decision
When considering separation or going through a divorce, relief, sadness, anger, fear and uncertainty can exist together. One feeling does not cancel out another. Feeling relieved does not mean the relationship never mattered, and feeling sad does not necessarily mean you should return. You do not have to use your feelings as an answer to every decision you face at once.
During this period, the meaning of the relationship can become tangled with housing, finances, everyday responsibilities and your social circle. Considering these as separate topics may help you notice where you need emotional support and where you need practical information. Psychological counselling does not replace legal or financial advice.
Small areas within your control
It may not be possible to resolve every uncertainty on the same day. You can first separate what needs a decision this week from what can wait. Then consider what information is missing and whom you could ask for it. Marking something you do not yet know as ‘I do not know’ can be a more honest starting point than continually trying to fill the gap in your mind.
People close to you may give strong advice in different directions. You can tell them what kind of support you want: information, listening or help with an everyday task. It matters that you consider decisions in light of your own circumstances and safety, rather than to gain other people’s approval. You can ask for time to think.
Set boundaries around communication
Trying to resolve the whole history of the relationship and tomorrow’s arrangements in the same conversation can be exhausting. You could consider limits around the subject, timing and form of communication. A message might contain only the necessary information and a specific request. This suggestion is not safe for everyone, however; threats, stalking or violence call for support tailored to your safety.
A joint session or direct contact is not the goal in every situation. Decisions about communication should take account of safety and any legal arrangements in force. When there is danger, you do not have to keep talking in an effort to be better understood. For an immediate risk in Türkiye, you can call 112.
Do not leave children caught between adults
Where there are children, a simple, age-appropriate explanation without blame matters. A child may need to hear that the separation is not their fault. They should not be made responsible for carrying messages, choosing sides or comforting an adult. Adults can plan to preserve as much of the everyday routine and safe caregiving relationships as possible, always taking safety into account.
What you tell your social circle is also your decision. You can let people know about the change without sharing details, or say that you do not want to discuss it for now. You do not have to prepare an explanation for every question. You might call one person who supports you for help with practical tasks, and another when you need to rest or talk. One person is not expected to meet every need; a support network can consist of small, different parts, shaped by the possibilities actually available in your life.
Your place in a new routine
You do not have to feel that your life has immediately become a complete new beginning. A familiar routine, contact with someone you trust or one small decision of your own can be a start. Emotional support can accompany you in understanding your needs during this process, rather than deciding the outcome of the relationship for you. Your own pace and the realities of your circumstances can remain part of the conversation.
